Artist James Griffith will discuss how his personal history and his fascination with light has led him to make the pictured painting on viewArtwork on view in Gyre March 3–7:James Griffith, The Sun and the Gravity of Radiance #2 , 2020Artist James Griffith will discuss how his personal history and his life-long fascination with light has led him to make The Sun and the Gravity of Radiance #2, 2020. He will also touch on how learning about evolution, extinction, and the history of the universe has helped him cope with our contemporary ecological crisis.Artist Statement for the series of paintings, The Sun and the Gravity of Radiance:"This series of Sun paintings form a meditation on an origin story. The subject is the star at the center of our solar system, the single source of energy for life on our planet. Everything we are, everything we experience, every thought, feeling and expression is in fact an elaboration of energy from the sun. In our lifetimes, science has observed and measured the ways that stars manufacture the complex molecules of life from simple elements that were produced by the Big Bang at the birth of the universe. Our star, the Sun, has further energized our planet with photosynthesis which made the Earth a habitat for animals like us. The Sun is then a unifying force on the deepest physical levels as well as giving us our daily rhythms of Day itself. It is the thing we all stand under equally. In my painting practice, for more than a decade I have replaced traditional paints with an asphaltum that I make from the tar collected at the La Brea Tar Pits. The geological history of this material and other topics associated with it, paleontology, evolution, and extinction, inspire my work and serve as a conceptual framework widens my thoughts about painting into the deep time of our origins, far beyond our current historical moment."ParkingPaid parking is available in Lot E1 (short-term < 90 mins) and Pyramid Parking Structure (daily permits for purchase).
