Gordon Park is now a public park in Detroit neighborhood, but years ago this intersection at 12th and Clairmont was home to a "blind pig." A reunion party for a returning soldier of Vietnam, was disrupted by a police raid to arrest all patrons in attendance. For doing something many people call a party, these people were arrested and profiled, essentially on the color of their skin. This was one of many chain of reactions exposing the inequity in society and fueling more white flight, continuing to feed into the divide and separation we see today. I can only imagine my reaction to being arrested for celebrating the return of a soldier. This is one small microcosm of a bigger system, so we move through yoga to learn our history, sit with our truth, and reflect through action on how to be better for ourselves and for one another. Classes are donation based and available for all members of the community. Classes will begin with history story telling at 12:00 PM, yoga flow beginning around 12:15, and finishing up Savasana by 1:30 PM to open space for community networking, dialogue, holding space for one another, and promoting our respective causes and stories to drive our important movements towards change, on and off of our mats.COVID-19 is still happening, so I will not be offering hands on assists and encourage social distancing. I'll have my face covered and encourage others to do so, but do not require. Please bring mats (reach out if you need extra. I'm not bringing extra due to pandemic but am happy to make arrangements for anyone who is in need).
