Pancake Fundraiser for Heidelberg Project Student Study Abroad - Rose's Fine Food - Detroit

In partnership with Rose's Fine Food, The Heidelberg Project's HALA program will be hosting a pancake fundraiser on Friday, October 18th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm to support its Detroit to the Diaspora Initiative- an annual cultural immersion, study abroad program to countries throughout the African diaspora. DTD is a life-changing experience for Detroit youth, providing culturally vibrant and economically enriching experiences that widen their global, social network for the purposes of strengthening students’ positive identity and leadership in their own lives and ultimately among their communities throughout Detroit.Ghana will be the inaugural destination in the summer of 2020 for 10 African American students from Detroit’s Southeastern High School. For two weeks in July, SEHS students will be immersed in Ghanaian culture, visiting five cities (Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Korforidua and Elmina). Students will participate in tours to cultural and historical sites, a traditional village, nature reserves, marketplaces and their artisans, as well as complete a service-learning project connected to bead-making and drum-making enterprises and cooperatives. Student pairs will be assigned to explore, research and document one of the following categories: Technology, Cuisine, Fashion, History, Cultural Rituals, or Music & Dance. The assignment will also require students create a culminating exhibition and presentation of their research to the SEHS community during the fall semester of the 2020/21 school year.DTD believes this, in turn, is a very pivotal moment for Detroit’s youth to be empowered and grow as leaders taking part in Detroit’s rebuilding. DTD believes this growth is rooted in the ability for youth to connect to the physical place of their original identity, which can create pathways for a heightened and positive sense of individual purpose that will lead to larger, positive impacts on our communities here in Detroit and the United States. *Please note that there are two time slots. 6 pm and 8 pm.
