8th Annual Colorado Jazz Workshop Jazz Festival - Dazzle - Denver

At this year's Jazz Festival, Colorado Jazz Workshop is honoring and featuring its talented directors Keith Oxman, Marc Sabatella, Rex Matzke, and Ron LeGault. Joining that stellar lineup will be longtime CJW friend and supporter, internationally recognized Bob Montgomery.More about the guest artists . . .Trumpeter Bob Montgomery, an internationally recognized performing artist, has appeared throughout Europe, Australia, Canada, China, Mexico, Japan, Great Britain, New Zealand and the United States. He has performed in back-up orchestras for such artists as Sammy Davis Jr., Diana Ross, Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, and Nancy Wilson. Bob toured Europe with Clark Terry’s “Big Bad Band,” served as artist-in-residence in Adelaide, South Australia, appeared as featured soloist with the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra for the International Trumpet Guild, and appeared at Town Hall in New York City with Clark Terry for the New York JVC Jazz Festival’s tribute to Terry.Saxophonist Keith Oxman, a Denver, Colorado native, has gigged steadily as a leader and as a sideman for more than 25 years — including a stint on the road with the Buddy Rich Big Band. He also has appeared with artists such as Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey, Jack McDuff, Tom Harrell, Jon Hendricks and Mel Tormé. His sound and style are original, and his abilities as a writer make him a force to be reckoned with. While his original compositions have the qualities to make them standards for tomorrow’s musicians, his arrangements breathe life into little-heard standards. An excellent improviser, with a fine sound, agile technique and sure harmonic sense, Keith Oxman can swing like crazy.Pianist Marc Sabatella is a composer, and educator based in Denver, Colorado. His music has been characterized as “happily subverting the mainstream,” combining the “unpredictability of Thelonious Monk and lyricism of Bill Evans.” Marc has worked with the area’s top players, including Keith Oxman, Fred Hess, Ron Miles, Art Lande, and Hugh Ragin, as well as jazz greats such as Delfeayo Marsalis, Bobby Shew, John Fedchock, Allan Harris, Greg Abate, Red Holloway, Pete Christlieb, Marcus Printup, Wessell Anderson, Javon Jackson, Chico Freeman, Mel Martin, Sunny Wilkinson, and others.Saxophonist Rex Matzke holds a B.M.E. and a M. M. from the University of Nebraska and has pursued a Doctor of Arts in Saxophone Performance and Pedagogy with a Secondary Emphasis in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado. Rex has performed with Clark Terry, Louis Bellson, Bobby Shew, David Baker, Dominic Spera, Rich Matteson, Buddy Baker, Ed Shaughnessy, Milt Hinton, Bill Watrous, Denis DiBlasio and has toured with Big Band USA, the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, and the University of Northern Colorado Lab 1.Pianist Ron Legault, also an arranger, has performed with Denis DiBlasio, Bobby Shew, Brad Goode, Bootsy Barnes, Larry McKenna, John Vanore, Dale Devoe, Dru Heller, Bob Montgomery, Todd Reid, Mark Diamond, Ron Bland, Jill Fredrickson, and Al Hermann. Ron’s quintet performs regularly at such venues as Hotel St.Julien and Caffe Sole in Boulder. At Christmas, his quintet performs the musical suite “Charlie Brown Goes to the Nutcracker" (the music of Vince Guaraldi combined with Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite featuring Ron's original arrangements).Schedule for October 26, 201910:30 to 11:15-Monday Combo-North Stage11:15 to 12:00-Saturday PM Combo-South Stage12:00 to 12:45-Monday Big Band-North Stage12:45 to 1:30-Tuesday Combo (Early)-South Stage1:30 to 2:15-Wednesday Combo-North Stage2:15 to 3:00-Saturday AM Combo-South Stage3:00 to 3:45-Wednesday Big Band-North Stage3:45 to 4:30-Tuesday Combo (Late)-South Stage6:30 to 7:45-Saturday Big Band w/Faculty + Special Guest Bob Montgomery-North Stage8:30 to 9:45-CJW Sextet Featuring Faculty + Special Guest Bob Montgomery-South Stage
