As a child he lived under the communists and Nazis. His parents, especially his mother, showed resilience and courage, enabling the family to survive and reunite after WWII. His mother is probably the only person to point a pistol at a Nazi official and live to tell about it. To make that dream a reality, Elliott attended Ohio University and graduated with her B.A. in English. From there, she set off for England to get her M.A. at Hull University. During her time in England, she launched a creative writing magazine for the university and also created a free after-school program that taught poetry and creative writing to local kids.
