Playful narrative experiment "La Flor" (Part 1) - Cinematheque at the Cleveland Institute of Art - Cleveland

Thursday, April 23, at 6:45 pmLA FLOR (PART 1)Argentina, 2018, Mariano LlinásShot over a ten-year period, La Flor is one of the most celebrated and discussed movies of the past two years. However, being 14 hours long, it presents an almost insurmountable challenge to movie theatres that want to show it. Consisting of six episodes of varying lengths ranging from 47 minutes to over five hours (unlike TV miniseries with episodes of uniform duration), La Flor is a playful experiment in narrative that places the same four superb actresses in a series of different stories of diverse genres—a monster movie, a musical, a spy thriller, a period piece, et al. (Many of the tales don’t have endings, but they do boast ample digressions.) The serpentine, shape-shifting monster that is La Flor may be unworkable as a theatrical offering for a single-screen art house in Cleveland, but we’re still very curious about this magnum opus, and want to see at least some of it projected. To that end, tonight we will present Part 1 (episodes 1 & 2, encompassing both the monster movie and the musical) of the complete three-part (six-episode) work. Those who get hooked can watch La Flor‘s remaining 600 minutes on their own, via a digital platform. “The definition of a must-see.” –L.A. Times. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 203 min.
